The Ultegra XR sits proudly at the top of Shimano’s most popular Ultegra Big Pit/Surfcasting reel family. Packed with the latest long range casting technology including Rigid Cast, this insanely lightweight 14000 sized reel has been specifically designed to maximise rod speed when long range casting, whilst retaining smoothness under high winding loads.
With an upper mid-range price tag you get a lot of reel for your money with the Ultegra XR and one look at the specification tells you this is a serious long distance reel. With understated colours, a large spool, neat compact body made of Ci4+ composite, plus some of Shimano’s top long range casting technology, you’ll certainly not be short of features if you choose the Ultegra XR. In use you’ll appreciate the low weight, especially when pushing your casting range to the limit. The lightness enables you to generate faster rod speeds, which combined with other long range technology including Rigid Cast, leads to consistently longer casts.
Inside the lightweight CI4+ G FREE body is a combination of HAGANE Gear, X-SHIP, INFINITY DRIVE and SILENT DRIVE which work together to produce smooth, powerful rotation, even under extreme pressure and heavy loads. Long range casting is enhanced with some of Shimano’s leading technology including Super Slow 5 Oscillation, Parallel Body and Rigid Cast which combine to generate increased distance and supreme accuracy. For all-weather protection X-Protect technology prevents water from getting into the moving parts of the reel, ensuring your reel maintains its performance in all conditions. The Ultegra XR is also fitted with a Hi-Speed drag which can be locked and loosened with minimal rotation of the adjustment knob for precise fish-playing control at all times.

Hagane gear
The Hagane Drive Gear is produced by Shimano's coldforging technology, without the need for additional machining. This delivers a longlasting smoothness, strength, lightness and power at the very heart of the reel. Traditional diecast, machined gears are less durable under heavy loads.
X-Ship
X SHIP provides improved gear durability. By supporting the pinion gear on both ends with bearings, the pinion gear maintains precise alignment with the drive gear. This increased support allows the gears to stay in the same position under the heaviest loads. X-Ship technology also eliminates the friction between the spool shaft and gear to further benefit anglers with enhanced casting performance and casting distance of lighter lures.
Hagane Body
The Hagane Body is produced from highrigidity aluminium or magnesium. This creates stiffness and impact resistance, while at the same time eliminating flexing of the body. The result is a rocksolid housing and support for the moving internal gearing and greater efficienty throughout the reel.
Infinity Drive
Infinity Drive is a new construction that eliminates sliding resistance and realizes light winding in both load and no-load conditions. Infinity Drive is a non-contact construction where the inside of the pinion gear does not touch the main shaft. This reduction in sliding resistance is achieved by the application of a special low friction bushing which holds the main shaft and in addition a by the application of a special surface treatment to the main shaft itself. Handle roatation torque is reduced by approximately 30% compared to the conventional X-Ship construction.

X Protect
The contact type triplelip strucutre is introduced to the roller clutch, the pivotal point concerning water resistance. In this structure, the first lip prevents water from entering through the space between the rotor and the body. In addition, the special grease between the second and third lip where it makes contact will the rotor collar located at the upper part of the roller clutch not only resists water from entering but also minimizes friction resistance. Without jeopardizing the 'silky smooth rotation capacity', the vital feature of Stalla SW, exceptionnal water resistance, has been achieved to withstand the crashing and splashing of waves and spray.
Rigid Cast
Rigid Cast technology balances strenght and lightness of the main shaft to withstand the impact of extreme castingforce.
Parallel Body
PARELLEL BODY is designed to improve dynamic line flow from the reel. On many reels the spool is aligned slightly upwards towards the rod blank, but reels with PARELLEL BODY have the spool located parallel to the blank. The result: less line slapping on the blank as it travels towards the first guide during the cast, ultimately increasing performance.
Cl4 Plus
Cl4+ is an advanced version of the original Cl4. This highly technical material is 2.5 times stiffer than Cl4 and is used on many highend Shimano reels to increase weight savings. Use of Cl4+ for the body and rotor also delivers remarkable stiffness for better reel efficiency.
Hi-Speed Drag
The "Hi-Speed Drag" is the fastest drag function ever featured on a Shimano reel. Only a very small turn on the drag knob will transit the drag settings from 'free spool mode' to the 'fight mode'.
G Free Body
G FREE BODY technology has been developed to shift the reel's center of gravity closer to the rod. By moving the center of gravity closer to the angler’s hand, the G FREE BODY helps to reduce fatigue and enhance casting comfort.
AR-C Spool
The spool has a special spool ring shape. This creates a rectifying effect on the line and realizes both suppression of line trouble and long casting performance.
S-ARB
Shimano S ARB bearings are high corrosion resistant ARB ball bearings with an extra shield for improved protection against sand, salt or dust.
One Piece Bail
The onepiece bail wire has no gap for line to snag on during normal operation. Made of Stainless Stell, it reduces friction and allows the line to get onto the line roller quicker.
