If you are a carp angler and prefer dark ‘stealth-like’ colours go for the XTE, if you are a surfcaster, or prefer lighter colours, the ‘silver’ XSE should be your choice. Whichever you choose, you can be sure that you have made a great decision. Hidden inside the lightweight, rigid, CI4+ body of the Ultegra is a selection of Shimano’s most advanced technology. HAGANE Gear and X-SHIP combine with Infinity Drive and Silent Drive to deliver amazing smoothness and lightweight rotation.

However, don’t be fooled. Put the Ultegra under pressure and it will produce all of the power you need, and more. And whilst the internal engineering is a work of art, it’s the casting performance that you will be buying this reel for.

The Super Slow 5 Oscillation generates amazingly smooth line lay that is proven to reduce friction and increase casting potential. But there are other features that contribute too. Rigid Cast reduces spool deflection at the moment of release during a cast and Parallel Body sends the line at the perfect angle towards the first guide. And as the line flows over the lip of the aluminium AR-C spool it ‘coils down’ to reduce friction. The result is casting brilliance never seen at such an affordable price.

Hagane gear

The Hagane Drive Gear is produced by Shimano's coldforging technology, without the need for additional machining. This delivers a longlasting smoothness, strength, lightness and power at the very heart of the reel. Traditional diecast, machined gears are less durable under heavy loads. 

Cl4 Plus

Cl4+ is an advanced version of the original Cl4. This highly technical material is 2.5 times stiffer than Cl4 and is used on many highend Shimano reels to increase weight savings. Use of Cl4+ for the body and rotor also delivers remarkable stiffness for better reel efficiency.

Infinity Drive 

Infinity Drive is a new construction that eliminates sliding resistance and realizes light winding in both load and no-load conditions. Infinity Drive is a non-contact construction where the inside of the pinion gear does not touch the main shaft. This reduction in sliding resistance is achieved by the application of a special low friction bushing which holds the main shaft and in addition a by the application of a special surface treatment to the main shaft itself. Handle roatation torque is reduced by approximately 30% compared to the conventional X-Ship construction.

Super Slow Oscillation 10

Slower spool oscillation reduces the speed the line travels up and down the spool on the cast. This results less friction as line leaves the spool and reduced drag on the lead, which improves casting distance and accuracy. Shimano Standard Oscillation (up to 20 wraps per cycle) outperforms the industry standard. Shimano Slow Oscillating (up to 40 wraps per cycle) exceeds almost anything else ever seen. Shimano now has two Super Slow Oscillation systems, Super Slow 5 (55 wraps) and Super Slow 10 (105 wraps).

Rigid Cast

Rigid Cast technology balances strenght and lightness of the main shaft to withstand the impact of extreme castingforce.

AR-C Spool

Shimano ARC Spool is a patented spool design with an angled spool lip. This design enables the line to leave the spool with less friction and in smaller coils resulting in longer more accurate casts. ARC Spools are proven to reduce backlash and wind knots when using braid.

S-ARB

Shimano S ARB bearings are high corrosion resistant ARB ball bearings with an extra shield for improved protection against sand, salt or dust.

Parallel Body

The Parallel Body feature implicates that the spool is lined out parallel to the rod. This results in the reduction of line touching the rod and subsequently this increases the casting distance.

Instant Drag

Instant Drag allows the drag setting to be switched from free spool to a "fight" setting by tightening the Instant Drag lever on the front of the spool in only a few turns.
